Time and Tide

Sometimes we underestimate the essence and power of time in life.

If you grew up in an African home you will realise that the stream of questions that you were repeatedly asked at the tender age was about time.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Which university do you want to attend when you get older?

What time are you coming back home?

When will you get married?

I have taken you down the reminiscing lane, right?

They are not rare in an African home setting.

To reach our destination, time must be a factor in our decision making.

Has it come to your realisation that the future that was being chased is getting nearer than we imagined?

The reality of how fast I was approaching my dreams hit me very hard the moment I was welcomed into my first year of university. That time has evaporated into the thin air so fast that it has become history.

I guess some of us wished we were back in our toddling days when time was not a threat to us.

It appears as a scare to some that if they don’t enjoy the great time they have now, they will never have it back.

Is that the reason why some young people are getting drunk and drowned in the pool of procrastination at this youthful age without even realising the fruitful future lying ahead of them?

Others also have the notion that the future is a set of new and fresh time that will be packaged for them.

Don’t get it twisted!

The future reflects the preparations and decisions made in the present.

The past is a shadow that haunts the present and the future.

But the effect of the past on the present and the future lies in your hands.

The effort made in changing it, determines the fierceness as a fighter against the odds in life.

TIME is indeed a tool of the perfectionist, which was once used by the Maker to create man in His own image according to Genesis.

What a perfect design out of a great architecture!

The Book of Revelations reminds us that on the day of judgement, He will call man before Him for accountability of his actions.

TIME is a precious entity that measures wealth in life.

The number of hours worked determines the net worth.

The expensive character it possesses makes one savour for a Rolex but create a scare on the law makers upon hearing the bong of the Big Ben at noon.

And you are here telling me that time is not money?

TIME, a foe of love has caused so much pain to families because their biggest wish was to see their ‘amour’ survive and always be receiving hugs and kisses from them.

But wishes were not horses.

Have you forgotten that it is about time you celebrated your birthday?

That moment each year or every leap year we await in our lives for family and friends to usher us with gifts and blessings.

How great it would have been if it lasted the whole year?

The decider of a winner and a loser in a race.

It is what made Usain race like a lightning to become Bolt, made Mo a hero and even caused the bus to take off before you reached it.

Have you forgotten that time has turned students to become runners on the exam script?

It is abstract and not physical like a metal.

But when life throws a challenge at us, time is described as hard.

It is the portrayal of the mood of the rich and determinant of the fate of the needy.

Moments like these, the only sound I could hear is a wave of a whisper reminding me that, “Time and Tide wait for no man”.
